The Smart Choice for Most NoVA Homes

Architectural shingles — also called dimensional or laminate shingles — are constructed from multiple layers of asphalt bonded together, giving them a three-dimensional, textured appearance that flat 3-tab shingles simply can't match. The layered construction also translates directly into better performance: more wind resistance, more impact resistance, and longer life.

Unlike 3-tab shingles, which are being phased out of most manufacturer lines, architectural shingles are the new standard baseline. They're heavier, thicker, and engineered to handle the full range of Northern Virginia weather — summer heat, ice damming, hail, and tropical-remnant wind events.

  • Multi-layer construction for genuine depth and dimension
  • Wind resistance ratings from 110 to 130+ MPH
  • Class A fire rating across all major product lines
  • 50+ color options to match any home exterior
  • Compatible with standard roof decking and underlayment systems
  • Algae-resistant formulations widely available

Built for Northern Virginia Weather

Northern Virginia presents a full spectrum of roofing stressors. Summers bring 90°F+ heat with high UV exposure. Winters deliver ice damming, freeze-thaw cycles, and occasional ice storms. Spring and fall bring hail events and strong thunderstorm winds. Any shingle you install needs to handle all of it.

  • Heat: SBS-modified asphalt and granule coatings resist thermal cracking and UV degradation
  • Ice: Proper ice & water shield beneath shingles prevents ice dam leaks — we always install this
  • Wind: 130 MPH ratings with correct fastening; we follow manufacturer specs exactly
  • Hail: Class 3 and Class 4 options available; Class 4 can reduce insurance premiums
  • Algae: NoVA's humidity supports algae growth — copper-infused granules prevent black streaks

Architectural vs. Your Other Options

Architectural shingles hit the sweet spot for most homeowners — but knowing where they fall relative to other materials helps you make the right call.

A

vs. 3-Tab Shingles

Architectural shingles cost 10–20% more than 3-tab but last significantly longer, look better, and have better wind ratings. 3-tab is rarely worth the savings.

D

vs. Designer Shingles

Designer shingles mimic slate or shake and carry longer warranties. They cost 30–50% more. Worth it for high-end homes or those wanting insurance discounts from Class 4 ratings.

M

vs. Standing Seam Metal

Metal costs 2–3× more upfront but lasts 40–70 years with minimal maintenance. Architectural shingles win on first-cost; metal wins on lifetime cost for long-term owners.

S

vs. Synthetic Slate

Synthetic slate looks more distinctive and often carries a 50-year warranty. It costs roughly double architectural shingles. Best for homes where aesthetics matter more than pure value.

Installation Is Everything

The best shingle in the world installed incorrectly will fail early. Shingle warranties are voided by improper nailing, inadequate ventilation, wrong underlayment, and cutting corners on ice & water shield. Truett Roofing follows manufacturer specs exactly because Jack has personally installed over 600 roofs and knows that a clean, correct install is the only install worth doing.

  • Manufacturer-certified installation for full warranty eligibility
  • Proper ice & water shield at eaves, valleys, and penetrations — always
  • Ridge vent and attic ventilation assessment included on every job
  • New drip edge on every full replacement
  • No subcontractors — Jack's crew does the work
  • Written workmanship warranty in addition to manufacturer coverage

Architectural Shingle FAQs

What's the difference between GAF Timberline HDZ and the regular Timberline?
The HDZ (High Definition Zone) is GAF's current flagship line. It includes LayerLock factory-installed technology that permanently bonds the tabs, improving wind resistance without requiring special nailing. It also adds StainGuard Plus algae protection. The older Timberline CS was replaced by the HDZ. We install HDZ as the default GAF architectural shingle.
How long do architectural shingles actually last in Northern Virginia?
Manufacturers rate most architectural shingles at 30 years to lifetime with correct installation and ventilation. In Northern Virginia's climate, realistic expectation with a proper install is 22–28 years before replacement becomes worth considering — sometimes longer with regular inspections and minor repairs. The biggest life-shorteners are poor attic ventilation and improperly installed ice & water shield.
Will Class 4 impact-resistant shingles lower my insurance premium?
Many carriers serving Northern Virginia — Nationwide, Allstate, State Farm, USAA, and others — offer discounts of 5–30% for Class 4 impact-rated roofs. The discount depends on your carrier and policy. Owens Corning Duration STORM and CertainTeed Landmark IR are Class 4 options in the architectural shingle category. We can document the install for your carrier.
Do I need to replace all my shingles at once or can I do sections?
Sectional replacement is possible for localized damage, but matching colors exactly is difficult — shingles fade and change tone over time, so patches often show. For roofs over 15 years, full replacement is usually more cost-effective than patching, especially if you're planning to sell within 5–10 years. We'll tell you honestly which approach makes sense during the assessment.
Can I install architectural shingles over my existing roof?
Building code in Virginia generally allows one layer of shingles over an existing layer. We don't recommend it: covering old shingles hides the deck condition, adds weight, and voids most manufacturer warranties. A proper tear-off lets us inspect and repair decking, install fresh underlayment, and start with a clean system. For most homeowners, the added cost of tear-off is worth it.
